President's Report - August 2011

Winter certainly arrived with a vengeance in July – though fortunately we didn’t get the predicted snow.

Town Tidy and the Rugby World Cup

At the Business Association we are now looking ahead to spring, with our Town Tidy Up on the 14th of August and our Rugby World Cup decorations going up soon after.   Unfortunately the huge cost of the decorations and putting them up means most of these will be restricted to the retail areas.   We really encourage the retailers to get on board with the window decorating competition and the Scavenger Hunt.

Our research shows that the motels have only a limited number of bookings for the event, but there may still be visitors to the area either staying with friends and family or just passing through.   It will be an opportunity to really show what a friendly town we have and why we are the fastest growing town in New Zealand.

Our Town Tidy up is about giving the main street a freshen up with a jolly good clean and we are grateful for the community groups that have put their hands up to help.  We really want your RWC window dressing to look its best!  It is great to see Gracey’s on board already.

It would be really good if property owners and tenants could keep an eye on any graffiti and get it painted over as quickly as possible.  We know from past experience that the longer it is left the worse it gets.

Progress at last!!  The project manager has been appointed and at our last meeting the project required one more signature to get it started.  We are now expecting this to be completed prior to Christmas (I have a date but if I tell you I will hex it!)

Fire Brigade Centenary Celebrations

No sooner that the RWC is out of the way, it will be time to celebrate the history of the local volunteer fire brigade.  What a wonderful service they have done for our community – there is not a paid fireman in the Franklin District.

We would love to see local businesses supporting this great milestone event.

Finally don’t forget to book in for our Business after 5 on Wednesday 24 August.

Have a prosperous month…

Margaret Holmes
